Developments in teleconferencing software have enabled Alan Newman
Research to conduct hundreds of telephone focus groups. They
function very much like face-to-face groups, with minimal loss in
group dynamics. New telecommunication software enables participants
to speak to one another as if they were in the same room, while
offering clients a virtual back room in which to observe
the groups and communicate with one another. Telephone groups are
particularly useful for groups with senior level executives and
professionals and for clients with limited research budgets who
need national representation in their research. The cost is comparable
to in-person groups without travel expenses, and the technology
has been tested with positive results and continues to improve.
